How do single-use and reusable rhinolaryngoscopes compare?

Study evaluates performance and cost

An effective, and potentially cost-minimising, alternative to reusable rhinolaryngoscopes

A new study conducted in the otolaryngology centre at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation aimed to investigate how the newly developed Ambu® aScope 4 RhinoLaryngo stood up against reusable rhinolaryngoscopes. The study also examined the cost of introducing the single-use rhinolaryngoscope in various clinical settings.

The single-use rhinolaryngoscope: An evaluation and cost comparison

The study investigated whether the single-use aScope 4 RhinoLaryngo endoscope was clinically comparable to reusable rhinolaryngoscopes and how it compared in terms of cost in the outpatient clinic and acute surgical assessment units.

How does single-use performance and cost compare to reusable?

St. George’s study results

Physicians completed an assessment questionnaire immediately after performing procedures with the aScope 4 RhinoLaryngo Slim in the outpatient clinic. The cost-comparison analysis was conducted via the micro-costing methodology.

Cost savings in the Acute Surgical Assessment unit

At St. George’s University Hospital, the cost-comparison analysis found that aScope 4 RhinoLaryngo reduces costs in the acute surgical assessment unit by £73 compared to reusable video rhinolaryngoscopes and is cost-equivalent compared to eyepiece rhinolaryngoscopes.

(* Note: this equates to $132.15 AUD, exchange rate as at 08.10.20)

A cost equivalent alternative to video rhinolaryngoscopes in the outpatient clinic

The outpatient clinic conducts more than 4900 procedures per year. At this high volume, aScope 4 RhinoLaryngo was within £11 of being cost neutral compared to the reusable video rhinolaryngoscopes.

(* Note: this equates to $19.92 AUD, exchange rate as at 08.10.20)

85% of otolaryngologists in study said it could replace current scope

The physicians were able to complete the procedure successfully with aScope 4 RhinoLaryngo in 97% of procedures. For 85% of the procedures, physicians stated that the single-use rhinolaryngoscope could replace their reusable one.
